Hair oiling ritual before washing

Quick answer

Leave oil in your hair for at least 30 minutes; 1 to 2 hours suits most people, and overnight is fine for dry, rough or curly hair. Do not leave it in for days, as oil mixed with sweat and dust can make the scalp itchy. If you have an oily scalp or dandruff, keep it to 30 minutes to 1 hour. Oil before washing, 2 to 3 times a week, and wash it out with a mild shampoo.

“Should I keep oil on overnight or just for an hour?” “Can I leave it for two days?” “Should I oil before washing or after?” “Is it okay to go to college with oil in my hair?” These are some of the most common hair care questions in Pakistan, and every family seems to have a different answer. Some of us grew up with oil in our hair all week; others were told to wash it out after thirty minutes.

The truth is that there is no single perfect time for everyone. The right time depends on your scalp, your hair type, the weather and the oil you use. This guide gives you a clear, practical answer for each situation, explains what actually happens when oil sits on your hair, and lists the mistakes that cause more harm than good.

The short answer

For most people, here is a simple rule:

  • At least 30 minutes to get real benefit from the massage and the oil.
  • 1 to 2 hours is the sweet spot for most hair types and most of the year.
  • Overnight (8 to 10 hours) is fine and often helpful for dry, rough or curly hair, if your scalp is comfortable with it.
  • Not more than about 12 to 24 hours. Do not leave oil in for days.

And always wash it out with a mild shampoo afterwards.

What happens when oil sits on your hair?

When you massage oil into your scalp and spread it on your hair, a few things happen. The massage itself relaxes you and boosts circulation to the scalp. On the hair, the oil coats the outer layer (the cuticle) and smooths it, so the hair feels softer and tangles less. Some oils, such as coconut oil, can also soak a little way into the hair shaft over time and help reduce the amount of water the hair absorbs and loses during washing, which reduces wear and tear.

These benefits need some time, but not forever. Most of what oil can do for the hair surface happens within the first few hours. After that, leaving it longer gives little extra benefit, while the oil starts collecting dust, sweat and dead skin on the scalp.

It also helps to know that different oils behave differently. Light oils like almond and jojoba spread easily and feel comfortable even for a short session. Thick oils like castor need longer to work into the hair and are easier to handle overnight. Coconut oil is somewhere in between. A blended oil gives you a balance of these, which is one reason blends are so popular in Pakistan. Whichever oil you use, the time on the hair matters less than doing it regularly, with a proper five minute massage, and washing it out well.

Is it okay to leave oil in overnight?

Yes, for most people. Overnight oiling is a long tradition in Pakistani homes, and it is very practical: you oil before bed, sleep, and wash in the morning. It is especially good for dry, rough and curly hair, and in winter.

To do it well:

  • Use a moderate amount, not so much that it drips.
  • Tie your hair in a loose plait or bun, never tight.
  • Cover your pillow with an old towel or a cotton pillow cover you wash often, or wear a cotton scarf.
  • Wash it out in the morning with a mild shampoo.

Skip overnight oiling if you have dandruff, a very oily scalp, or if you wake up with an itchy scalp or small bumps. In that case, shorter oiling suits you better.

Warm oil, better spread

Stand your oil bottle in a mug of hot water for a few minutes before use. Warm (not hot) oil spreads more easily, so you need less of it, and the massage feels more relaxing. Never heat oil in the microwave, as it can get dangerously hot in spots.

Can I leave oil in for 2 or 3 days?

This is common in many homes, but it is not a good idea. After a day, oil on the scalp mixes with sweat, sebum, dust and pollution. This layer can block the scalp, make it itchy, feed the yeast that is linked to dandruff, and make hair smell. It also attracts dirt to the hair itself, so it looks dull, not shiny.

There is no extra benefit from oil sitting on the hair for days. You get more from oiling, washing and oiling again a few days later than from one long session.

Should you oil before or after washing?

Before washing is the traditional way and the most useful. Oiling before you shampoo protects the hair from being stripped too much, especially in hard water areas, and lets you enjoy a proper scalp massage. Read more in our guide to hard water and hair fall.

After washing, use only a tiny amount, two or three drops, on the ends of damp hair to reduce frizz and dryness. Do not apply oil to the scalp after washing unless your scalp is very dry; it will make clean hair look greasy and attract dust.

Does the weather change how long you should oil?

  • Summer: in the heat, sweat and dust build up faster. Keep it to 1 to 2 hours and wash out the same day. See our summer hair care guide.
  • Monsoon: humid weather makes oiled hair feel sticky. Shorter oiling, and dry your hair fully after washing.
  • Winter: dry air and hot water dry the hair out, so overnight oiling suits most people. See our winter hair care guide.

Can you go out with oil in your hair?

Many students, office workers and people who wear a hijab or dupatta ask this. You can, but it is not the best choice. Oil on the scalp catches dust, smoke and sweat outdoors, and under a covering it stays warm and damp, which can make the scalp itchy. Oiled hair also stains scarves, collars and caps.

If oiling in the evening or early morning is not possible and you must go out, use a very small amount, mostly on the lengths rather than the scalp, tie your hair loosely and wear a clean cotton covering. Wash it out the same evening. Better still, move your oiling to the night before a wash day, so the oil does its work while you sleep.

How long to leave oil in children’s hair

Oiling children’s hair is a sweet habit in many Pakistani homes. For children, use a mild oil and a small amount, massage very gently, and keep it on for 30 minutes to 1 hour, or overnight once a week if their hair is dry. Wash it out with a gentle baby or children’s shampoo. Keep oil away from the eyes, patch test any new oil, and avoid strong essential oils on babies and young children. If a child has scaly patches, bald spots or an itchy scalp that does not settle, see a doctor, as this can be a scalp infection that oil will not fix.

A sample weekly oiling plan

DayDry or normal hairOily scalp
Monday nightOil, 5 minute massage, leave overnightRest day
TuesdayWash and conditionOil 1 hour before washing, then wash
Thursday nightOil, leave overnightRest day
FridayWash and conditionOil 1 hour before washing, then wash
WeekendOptional third oiling, 1 to 2 hours before washingWash if needed, oil only the ends

On the days in between, a few drops of oil on the ends is enough. Adjust the plan for your own week; regular beats perfect.

How often should you oil?

Two to three times a week is ideal for most people. Once a week is still useful if you are busy. Daily oiling is not needed and usually means washing every day too, which can dry the scalp.

A simple plan:

  • Busy students and office workers: oil the night before your wash days, twice a week, and wash in the morning.
  • Homemakers and weekends: oil in the morning, keep it on for 1 to 2 hours while you do chores, then wash.
  • Men with short hair: oil for 30 minutes to 1 hour before a shower, 2 to 3 times a week.

How much oil should you use?

Less than most people think. As a guide:

  • Short hair: 1 to 2 teaspoons.
  • Shoulder length hair: about 1 tablespoon.
  • Long, thick hair: 1 to 2 tablespoons.

If your hair is still greasy after two shampoos, you used too much. If your scalp feels dry and tight halfway through, you can add a little more next time.

How to wash oil out properly

  1. Put a small amount of shampoo on your oiled hair before wetting it, and massage it in. This loosens the oil.
  2. Add a little lukewarm water, lather and rinse.
  3. Shampoo a second time if needed, this time only on the scalp.
  4. Apply conditioner to the lengths and ends and rinse.
  5. Finish with a cool rinse, then pat dry.

Avoid very hot water, which dries the scalp, and avoid scrubbing with your nails.

Common oiling mistakes

  • Leaving oil in for days and going out in dust and sun with it.
  • Using too much, then washing three or four times with strong shampoo.
  • Massaging with nails or too hard, which damages the scalp and pulls out hair.
  • Tying oiled hair tightly, which causes breakage at the hairline and the back.
  • Combing hard right after oiling, when tangles are worst. Detangle gently with a wide tooth comb.
  • Oiling heavily with dandruff, which can make flakes worse.
  • Expecting instant results. Give a routine 6 to 8 weeks.

How long before oiling shows results?

Softness and shine usually show from the first few washes. Fewer broken hairs in the comb tends to show after four to eight weeks of regular oiling, because the hair is less dry and tangles less. Changes in overall thickness take longer, usually two to three months, since hair grows only about one centimetre a month. If you lose a lot of hair from the root, or in patches, oiling alone is not enough; please see a doctor and read our hair fall treatment at home guide.
