Quick answer

To oil your hair properly, detangle dry hair, part it into sections, apply a small amount of warm (not hot) oil to the scalp, massage with your fingertips for about 5 minutes, spread the rest to the ends, leave it on for 1 to 2 hours or overnight, then shampoo before fully wetting your hair and rinse with lukewarm water. Oil 2 to 3 times a week for dry hair and 1 to 2 times a week for an oily scalp.

Most of us grew up with an ammi, nani or dadi pouring warm oil on our heads every Friday and massaging it in while we complained. Hair oiling is one of the oldest beauty habits in Pakistan, and it is still one of the simplest and cheapest things you can do for your hair. But a lot of people oil the wrong way: too much oil, too hot, left on for days, or rubbed so hard that more hair breaks than before.

This guide walks you through how to oil your hair properly, step by step: how much oil to use, how long to leave it, whether to oil wet or dry hair, how often to oil for your hair type, and the common mistakes to avoid. Whether you have long straight hair, curly hair, a short cut or a beard, the basics are the same.

Why oil your hair at all?

Regular hair oiling does a few simple but useful things:

  • Reduces friction and breakage. Oil coats the hair, so it tangles less and breaks less when you comb, tie or sleep on it.
  • Protects during washing. Oiling before shampoo (a pre-wash treatment) means the shampoo strips less moisture from your hair.
  • Softens dry, rough hair caused by hard water, sun and winter air.
  • Massage helps the scalp. Five minutes of fingertip massage relaxes you and increases blood flow to the scalp.
  • Adds shine by smoothing the outer layer of the hair.

With regular use, a good herbal oil helps reduce hair fall and breakage and keeps the scalp comfortable. What oiling cannot do is change your genes or replace medical treatment, so be realistic and consistent. If hair fall is your main concern, read our guide to hair fall treatment at home as well.

Before you start: what you need

  • A hair oil you like (see which oil to use below).
  • A small bowl, if you want to warm the oil.
  • A wide tooth comb.
  • An old towel or dupatta to protect your clothes and pillow.
  • A mild shampoo for wash day.

How to oil your hair: step by step

Step 1: Detangle dry hair

Start with dry or very slightly damp hair. Comb it gently with a wide tooth comb, starting at the ends and working up to the roots. If you oil tangled hair, you will pull out more hair during the massage.

Step 2: Warm the oil slightly (optional)

Warm oil spreads more easily and feels relaxing. Put the oil you need in a small steel bowl and stand it in a bigger bowl of hot water for a couple of minutes. Do not heat the oil directly on the stove and do not microwave it in the bottle. Always test a drop on the inside of your wrist: it should feel pleasantly warm, never hot. In summer you can skip this step completely.

Step 3: Part your hair into sections

Make a parting down the middle, then more partings about one inch apart on each side. Working in sections means the oil reaches the scalp instead of just sitting on top of the hair. For short hair or men’s cuts, you can simply run your fingers through in rows.

Step 4: Apply oil to the scalp

Dip your fingertips in the oil, or use the nozzle of a flip-top bottle, and apply a little oil along each parting. You do not need to soak the scalp. A thin layer along every parting is enough.

Step 5: Massage for about 5 minutes

This is the most important step. Use the pads of your fingers (not your nails) and move in small circles, pressing gently so the skin of your scalp moves. Cover the front hairline, the sides above your ears, the crown and the back of your head near the neck. Do not rub hard or pull the hair. Five minutes is enough; you are relaxing the scalp, not kneading dough.

Step 6: Spread the rest through the lengths

Rub whatever oil is left on your palms over the lengths and especially the ends, which are the oldest and driest part of your hair. Then loosely plait or bun your hair. Do not tie it tightly.

Step 7: Leave it on for 1 to 2 hours, or overnight

One to two hours is enough for most people. If your hair is very dry, you can leave it on overnight with an old towel on your pillow. Do not leave oil in for two or three days: it collects dust and sweat and can make your scalp itchy.

Step 8: Wash it out properly

Apply shampoo to the scalp before wetting your hair fully, or with only a little water. This helps the shampoo grab the oil. Massage, rinse with lukewarm water, and shampoo a second time if your hair still feels greasy. Use conditioner on the lengths only. Finish with a cool rinse, then pat dry with a soft towel or an old cotton t-shirt.

The two-shampoo trick

If oil never seems to wash out completely, shampoo twice. The first wash breaks down the oil, the second one actually cleans the scalp. This is better than using a very harsh shampoo once.

How much oil should you use?

Less than you think. As a rough guide:

Hair lengthOil per session
Short hair or men’s cutAbout 1 teaspoon (5 ml)
Shoulder lengthAbout 2 teaspoons (10 ml)
Long hair, mid backAbout 1 tablespoon (15 ml)
Very long or very thick hairUp to 2 tablespoons (20 to 30 ml)

At these amounts, one 200 ml bottle of oil lasts one person roughly 5 to 8 weeks when oiling 2 to 3 times a week. If you are washing your hair three times to get the oil out, you are using too much.

How often should you oil your hair?

Hair and scalp typeHow oftenTip
Dry, frizzy or curly hair2 to 3 times a weekOvernight oiling works well. Focus on the ends.
Normal hair2 times a week1 to 2 hours before washing is enough.
Oily scalp1 to 2 times a weekUse less oil on the scalp, more on the lengths, and wash the same day.
Fine, thin hair2 times a weekUse a small amount so hair does not look flat; wash out well.
Men with short hair2 times a weekA teaspoon massaged into the scalp is plenty.

Oil on wet hair or dry hair?

Apply oil to dry or slightly damp hair, before washing. Oil and water do not mix, so oil on soaking wet hair just sits on the surface. Many people in Pakistan also put a few drops of oil on the ends of clean, towel-dried hair to control frizz; that is fine, as long as it is only a few drops and only on the ends.

Is it okay to leave oil overnight?

Yes, for most people overnight oiling is fine and many love it for dry hair, especially in winter. Wrap your hair loosely, put an old towel on your pillow and wash it out in the morning. If you have an oily scalp, dandruff that gets worse with oil, or acne along your hairline or forehead, keep oiling to one or two hours instead, and keep oil off your face.

Which oil should you use?

Every traditional oil has its own feel. Here is how the common ones you find in Pakistani homes compare:

  • Coconut oil (khopray ka tail): light, moisturising, a favourite for everyday use. Solidifies in winter.
  • Sesame oil (til ka tail): light and warming, a classic base for desi herbal oils.
  • Castor oil (arandi): very thick and sticky on its own, so it is usually mixed with lighter oils. Popular for the hairline, eyebrows and beard.
  • Almond oil (badam rogan): soft and gentle, good for dry ends.
  • Olive oil (zaitoon): rich, good for very dry or curly hair.
  • Kalonji oil (black seed): a traditional favourite for the scalp, strong smell on its own.
  • Mustard oil (sarson): traditional and warming, but strong smelling and can irritate some scalps.
  • Rosemary oil: an essential oil, always diluted in a carrier oil, never used neat.

A herbal blend gives you several of these in one bottle, plus herbs like amla, bhringraj, shikakai, brahmi and hibiscus that are traditionally infused into hair oils in our region. That is the idea behind Zeenat Herbal Hair Oil: 20+ herbs in 10+ oils including castor, coconut, sesame, almond, olive, jojoba, walnut and kalonji, with Vitamin E and rosemary, light enough not to feel sticky. Oiling for men: hair and beard

Men often skip oiling because they think it is only for long hair. A short scalp massage twice a week is just as useful for men, and many men in Pakistan notice the hairline and crown first. Use about a teaspoon, massage for five minutes, and wash it out after an hour if you do not like the look of oiled hair at work. For beards, a few drops worked into the skin under the beard and combed through keeps it soft and reduces itchiness; wash it out the same day.

Oiling children’s hair

Gentle oiling is a lovely routine with children, and a common one in Pakistani families. Use a small amount, massage very lightly, keep oil away from the eyes, and always do a patch test first because some oils (especially those with essential oils) can irritate sensitive skin. For babies, ask your doctor before using any oil on the scalp.

Common hair oiling mistakes

  1. Using far too much oil, then scrubbing with harsh shampoo to get it out.
  2. Very hot oil, which can burn the scalp. Warm, never hot.
  3. Leaving oil in for days as a “deep treatment”. It attracts dust and can make the scalp itchy.
  4. Rough massage with nails or rubbing hair between your palms, which tangles and breaks it.
  5. Tying oiled hair in a tight choti overnight, pulling at the roots.
  6. Oiling just before going out in strong sun or dust, which collects dirt.
  7. Expecting results in a week. Hair care is slow. Judge your routine after two to three months.
  8. Switching oils every few days. Pick one good oil and stick with it.

Adjusting your routine for the seasons

Summer: use a little less oil, keep it to one or two hours, and wash the same day, since sweat and oil together can make the scalp itchy. Aloe vera gel mixed into the oil keeps it lighter.

Monsoon: humidity makes hair frizzy, so a few drops of oil on the ends after washing help. Make sure hair dries fully before tying it.

Winter: this is when oiling helps most. Dry air, gas heaters and hot water all dry the hair out. Overnight oiling two to three times a week works well for most people. Our winter hair care guide has more tips.

Hair oiling myths

“More oil means more benefit”

No. Your scalp can only take in a small amount. Extra oil just sits on the hair, and you end up using a harsh shampoo or washing several times to remove it. A small amount massaged well is the right way.

“Oil makes hair grow overnight”

Hair grows roughly one centimetre a month whatever you do. Oiling supports a healthy scalp and reduces breakage, so with time you keep more of the length you grow. That is why results take months, not days.

“Oil helps every kind of dandruff”

Dry, flaky winter scalp often feels better with oiling. But some dandruff is linked to yeast on the scalp, and heavy oil can make that type worse. If your flakes are yellow, greasy or itchy despite regular washing, keep oiling short, wash the same day, and ask a dermatologist about an anti-dandruff shampoo.

“Oiling is only for women”

Men benefit just as much from a regular scalp massage, and men are often the ones most worried about a thinning crown or hairline.

Signs your routine is working

  • Less hair in your comb and on the bathroom floor after a few weeks.
  • Hair feels softer and tangles less, especially at the ends.
  • Fewer split ends and less breakage when you tie your hair.
  • Your scalp feels comfortable: not tight, not itchy, not greasy the next day.
  • Hair looks shinier after washing.

If your scalp becomes itchy, red or gets small bumps after oiling, stop using that oil and try a lighter one, or check with a doctor.

Make it a habit

The secret of hair oiling is not a special oil or a special technique, it is doing it regularly. Pick two fixed evenings a week, for example Thursday and Sunday night, and treat it as your relaxing time. It is also why many families order oil in bulk instead of one bottle at a time: our 2 Bottle Deal and 3 Bottle Deal make it cheaper to keep a bottle for each person in the house.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I leave oil in my hair?

1 to 2 hours is enough for most people. Overnight is fine for dry hair. Do not leave oil in for 2 to 3 days, as it collects dust and sweat and can make the scalp itchy.

Should I apply oil to wet or dry hair?

Apply oil to dry or slightly damp hair before washing. Oil does not spread into soaking wet hair. A few drops on the ends of towel-dried hair to control frizz is fine.

How many times a week should I oil my hair?

2 to 3 times a week for dry, frizzy or curly hair, about twice a week for normal hair, and 1 to 2 times a week for an oily scalp, washing it out the same day.

How much hair oil should I use?

About 1 teaspoon for short hair, 2 teaspoons for shoulder length hair and 1 tablespoon for long hair. If you need several washes to get it out, you are using too much.

Is it good to oil hair every day?

Daily oiling is not needed and can lead to build-up and an itchy scalp. 2 to 3 times a week with a proper wash is better for most people.

How do I wash oil out of my hair easily?

Apply shampoo to the scalp before fully wetting your hair, massage, rinse with lukewarm water and shampoo a second time if needed. Use conditioner on the lengths only.
