Quick answer
Hard water, common from bores, tube wells and tankers in Pakistan, leaves calcium and magnesium on the hair, making it dry, rough and brittle so it breaks more. It is rarely the only cause of hair falling from the root. To protect your hair, oil 1 to 2 hours before every wash, use a little mild shampoo and rinse well, always condition, rinse last with filtered water, and use a diluted vinegar or lemon rinse once a week.
“Ever since we moved to this house, my hair has been falling.” “In Karachi my hair was fine, in Islamabad it became like straw.” “Our boring ka pani is so khara, it leaves white marks on the taps.” If you have said or heard any of these, you already suspect the water.
Hard water is very common in Pakistan. Much of the water in our homes comes from underground bores and tube wells, and in many cities and housing societies it carries a lot of dissolved minerals. Hard water does not usually make hair fall out from the root by itself, but it can make hair dry, rough, dull and tangled, so it breaks far more easily, and that broken hair ends up in your comb and on the bathroom floor. This guide explains how to tell if your water is hard, what it really does to hair, and practical, affordable ways to protect your hair at home.
What is hard water?
Water is called “hard” when it contains a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. As rainwater moves through soil and rock, it picks up these minerals. Underground water from bores and wells usually picks up more than surface water. Water can also carry iron, which leaves orange or brown stains, and in some areas the water is salty (khara), with high levels of dissolved salts.
Hard water is not dirty and is not, by itself, a health danger for most people. But it reacts with soap and shampoo and leaves a thin mineral layer on everything it touches: taps, tiles, kettles, your skin and your hair.
Signs your water is hard
You do not need a laboratory to get a good idea. Look for these signs at home:
- White crust on taps, shower heads and inside the kettle or geyser pipes.
- Soap does not lather well, and you need a lot of shampoo to get any foam.
- Hair feels rough, sticky or “coated” right after washing, even with conditioner.
- Skin feels dry and tight after a bath.
- Glasses and steel utensils have white spots after they dry.
- Clothes feel stiff and white clothes go greyish.
- Hair changes when you travel: it feels better in another city and worse when you come home.
For a better answer, you can buy a cheap TDS (total dissolved solids) meter online, or ask a water filter company to test your water. Many housing societies and water boards can also tell you about the water in your area.
What hard water does to your hair
It leaves a mineral layer on the hair
Every time you wash, a little calcium and magnesium stays on the hair surface. Over weeks this builds up into a film that makes hair feel rough and look dull. Conditioner and oil cannot get through it properly, so the hair stays dry inside.
Shampoo does not rinse out well
Hard water reacts with shampoo and leaves a sticky residue (soap scum) on the hair and scalp. This can make the scalp itchy and flaky and the roots look flat.
Hair becomes brittle and breaks
Dry, rough hair tangles easily, and tangled hair snaps when you comb it. This breakage is what most people see as “hair fall from hard water”. Look at the hairs in your comb: if many are short pieces without a small white bulb at one end, they are broken, not shed from the root.
Colour fades and turns brassy
Minerals, and especially iron, can make coloured, highlighted and mehndi treated hair look orange or dull and fade faster.
Does hard water cause hair fall?
Here is the honest answer. Research so far suggests hard water mainly damages the hair shaft (the part you can see), making it rough, weaker and more likely to break. There is not strong evidence that it makes healthy hair fall out from the root on its own.
So if you have moved house or city and your hair suddenly feels terrible, hard water is a very likely reason for the dryness and breakage. But if hair is coming out from the root in large amounts, there is usually something else going on as well: stress, a recent illness or fever, low iron or vitamin D, thyroid problems, hormonal changes after pregnancy, crash dieting, or genetic thinning. The change of city often comes with stress and a new routine too. It is worth checking these with a doctor rather than blaming only the water. Read our hair fall treatment at home guide for a full list of common causes.
A quick comb test
Collect the hairs from your comb for one day. Long hairs with a tiny white bulb at one end have shed from the root. Short or uneven pieces with no bulb have broken. If most are broken pieces, hard water and dryness are likely the main problem, and the steps below should help a lot.
How to protect your hair from hard water
You cannot always change the water in your home, but you can do a lot to reduce its effect.
1. Oil before you wash
Oiling before washing is one of the most useful habits in a hard water home. A layer of oil on the hair makes it absorb less water during the wash, so fewer minerals settle on it, and the hair stays softer. Massage oil into your scalp for about 5 minutes, spread it along the lengths, and leave it for 1 to 2 hours or overnight before you shampoo. See our guide to oiling your hair the right way.
2. Use less shampoo, but rinse longer
Shampoo only the scalp, not the full length, and use a small amount. Then rinse for longer than you think you need, at least a full minute, so less residue stays behind.
3. Never skip conditioner
Conditioner smooths the hair surface and makes it easier to detangle without breaking. Apply it to the lengths and ends every time you wash, leave it for two or three minutes and rinse.
4. Try an acidic final rinse
A mild acidic rinse can help loosen mineral build up and smooth the cuticle. Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (or the juice of half a lemon) into a mug of water and pour it over your hair after shampoo. Leave it for a minute, then rinse with plain water. Use it once a week, not every wash, and keep it away from your eyes. Skip it if your scalp is broken, sore or very sensitive.
5. Use a clarifying wash now and then
Once every two to four weeks, a clarifying shampoo can remove build up that normal shampoo leaves behind. Follow it with a good conditioner, as clarifying shampoos are drying. Do not use them every day.
6. Rinse with filtered or bottled water
If your water is very hard, keep a bucket or a few bottles of filtered (RO) water in the bathroom and use it only for the last rinse. It is a simple, cheap trick and makes a noticeable difference to how hair feels.
7. Fit a shower filter
Shower head filters are now easy to find online in Pakistan. They do not soften water as fully as a whole house system, but many people find their hair and skin feel better with one, especially where water has chlorine, iron or sediment. Change the cartridge as the maker advises.
8. Be gentle when hair is wet
Hair is weakest when wet. Pat it dry, do not rub it, and detangle with a wide tooth comb starting from the ends. Avoid tying wet hair tightly.
A weekly routine for hard water homes
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 2 to 3 times a week | Oil the scalp and lengths 1 to 2 hours before washing (or overnight for dry hair) |
| Every wash | Small amount of mild shampoo on the scalp, rinse well, conditioner on the lengths |
| Last rinse | Filtered or bottled water if you can |
| Once a week | Diluted vinegar or lemon rinse after shampoo |
| Every 2 to 4 weeks | Clarifying shampoo, followed by a deep conditioner or hair mask |
| Daily | Two or three drops of oil on dry ends, wide tooth comb, loose hairstyles |
Desi remedies that help in hard water
Always patch test first. Wash masks out within 30 to 45 minutes.
- Reetha and shikakai wash: Soak a few reetha (soapnut) shells and shikakai pods overnight, boil for 10 minutes, cool and strain. Use the liquid as a gentle wash. It lathers less than shampoo but many people find it softer on hair. Keep it out of the eyes, it stings.
- Dahi mask: Plain yoghurt on the lengths for 20 to 30 minutes before washing helps hair feel smoother.
- Aloe vera gel: Fresh gel on the scalp and lengths for 30 minutes is soothing for a dry, itchy scalp.
- Egg and oil mask: One egg beaten with a tablespoon of oil on the lengths for 20 minutes, washed out with cool water (hot water cooks the egg).
Hard water in Pakistani cities
Water quality changes from area to area and even from house to house, depending on whether water comes from a bore, a tube well, a tanker or the city supply. In general, many people in Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad and Quetta report hard or salty water, especially from bores and tankers. Newer housing societies that rely on deep bores often have harder water than older areas on city supply. If you use tanker water, the quality can change from one delivery to the next.
The point is not which city is worst but what is coming out of your own tap. A TDS meter or a test from a filter company is the easiest way to know.
Is a water softener worth it?
A whole house water softener or RO plant is the most complete solution, but it is expensive to buy and maintain. For most families, the steps above (oil before wash, conditioner, a filtered final rinse and a shower filter) give most of the benefit at a much lower cost. If you are building or renovating, or if hard water is also damaging your geyser, taps and tiles, a softener can be worth discussing with a plumber or filter company.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using more and more shampoo to get lather. It only leaves more residue.
- Washing every day with very hot water, which dries the scalp further.
- Vinegar or lemon at full strength. Always dilute, and do not use it every day.
- Brushing wet, tangled hair hard, which snaps it.
- Blaming only the water for heavy hair fall from the root, and missing a health cause.
- Changing products every week. Give a routine four to six weeks to show results.
Choosing an oil for hard water
Because oiling before washing is so helpful in hard water, it is worth choosing an oil you like using. A blend usually spreads better and washes out more easily than a single heavy oil. Look for nourishing oils such as coconut, sesame, almond, olive and castor, and traditional herbs like amla, shikakai and reetha, which have long been used in desi hair care.
Zeenat Herbal Hair Oil blends 10+ oils with 20+ herbs including amla, bhringraj, shikakai and reetha, plus rosemary and lavender essential oils. Used before washing, 2 to 3 times a week, it nourishes the scalp, softens dry hair and helps reduce hair fall and breakage with regular use.
Boring ka khara pani baalon ko khushk aur kamzor bana kar torta hai; is liye shampoo se pehle 1 se 2 ghante tel zaroor lagayein.
Shampoo kam miqdaar mein sirf sar par lagayein, achhi tarah dhoyein, aur har baar conditioner lagayein.
Aakhri baar baal filter ya bottle ke pani se dhoyein. Agar baal jar se zyada gir rahe hain to doctor se iron, vitamin D aur thyroid check karwayein.

Frequently asked questions
Does hard water cause hair fall?
Hard water mainly makes hair dry, rough and brittle, so it breaks more and you see more hair in your comb. There is not strong evidence that it makes healthy hair fall from the root by itself. Heavy hair fall from the root usually has another cause, such as stress, illness, low iron or thyroid problems.
How do I know if my water is hard?
White crust on taps and in the kettle, poor shampoo lather, hair that feels coated after washing, and white spots on glasses are common signs. A cheap TDS meter or a test from a water filter company gives a better answer.
How can I protect my hair from hard water at home?
Oil your hair before washing, use a small amount of mild shampoo and rinse well, always use conditioner, rinse last with filtered or bottled water, and use a diluted vinegar or lemon rinse once a week.
Do shower filters help with hair fall?
Shower filters can reduce chlorine, iron and sediment, and many people find their hair feels softer with one. They help with dryness and breakage rather than hair falling from the root.
Is oiling good for hard water hair?
Yes. Oiling 1 to 2 hours before washing coats the hair so it absorbs less mineral water and stays softer. It is one of the most useful habits in a hard water home.
Why did my hair start falling after moving to a new city?
A change of water can make hair dry and brittle, but moving also brings stress, a new routine and diet changes, which can all affect hair. If hair falls heavily from the root for more than a few months, see a doctor.
