How to Get Long, Thick-Looking Hair Naturally: An Honest Desi Guide

Why your hair seems stuck at one length, and a simple desi routine to keep the length you grow.

By Zeenat Herbals ·

Long, healthy, shiny hair after a regular oiling routine

Quick answer

Hair grows about 1 cm a month and your maximum length is mostly genetic, so the secret to long hair is keeping the length you grow. Oil your scalp and ends 2 to 3 times a week, condition every wash, use lukewarm water, detangle gently with a wide tooth comb, trim half an inch every 8 to 12 weeks, avoid heat and tight styles, sleep in a loose plait, and eat enough protein, iron and vitamins.

Lambe, ghane, chamakdar baal. Ask almost any Pakistani girl what hair she wants and that is the answer, and plenty of men want thicker, fuller hair too. Search for “lambe baal kaise karein” and you will find hundreds of videos promising your hair will grow 3 inches in a week with onion juice, rice water or a secret oil.

Here is the honest truth, and it is actually good news: you cannot make your hair grow much faster than your body allows, but most people lose a lot of the length they do grow to breakage. If you stop that breakage, your hair can finally reach the length it was always capable of. This guide explains how hair grows, why it seems to “stop” at the shoulders, and a practical desi routine for long, strong, thicker-looking hair.

How hair really grows

Each hair grows from a follicle in your scalp in a cycle. Most of your hairs are in the growing phase (anagen) at any time, which lasts anywhere from two to seven years. Then the hair rests for a few months and falls out, and a new one starts in its place.

  • Speed: on average hair grows about 1 cm a month, roughly 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 inches) a year.
  • Maximum length: depends on how long your growing phase lasts. This is mostly genetic, which is why some families have waist-length hair and others never pass the shoulders.
  • Thickness: depends on how many follicles you have and how thick each strand is. Also mostly genetic.

So what can you control? Three things: the health of your scalp, the nutrition your body has available, and above all how much of your hair breaks before it ever reaches its full length.

Why your hair seems stuck at one length

If your hair has been “the same length for years”, it is almost certainly growing, but breaking at the ends at the same speed. The ends of long hair are years old. They have survived hundreds of washes, combs, sun, dust, hot water and hair ties, and they are the weakest part. Common reasons for breakage in Pakistan:

  • Rough towel drying and combing wet hair hard.
  • Tight ponytails, tight buns and rubber bands, especially for school and office.
  • Straighteners, curling irons and blow dryers on high heat, especially during shaadi season.
  • Rebonding, keratin and bleach without proper aftercare.
  • Very hot water from the geyser in winter.
  • Sun, dust and pollution, plus hard water in many cities.
  • Cotton pillow covers and dupattas rubbing on the hair.
  • Never trimming, so split ends travel up the strand.

A weekly routine for long, strong hair

  1. Oil 2 to 3 times a week. Warm the oil, massage the scalp for 5 minutes, then smooth the rest down the lengths and especially the ends. Leave it on for 1 to 2 hours or overnight. Our guide on how to oil your hair the right way has the full method.
  2. Shampoo the scalp, not the ends. Lather at the roots only and let the foam rinse through the lengths. Use a mild shampoo.
  3. Condition every wash, from the middle to the ends.
  4. Lukewarm water, with a cooler final rinse.
  5. Pat dry with a soft cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel. No rubbing.
  6. Detangle gently with a wide tooth comb, starting from the ends and working up.
  7. Seal the ends with two or three drops of oil on damp or dry ends.
  8. Sleep in a loose plait on a silk or satin pillow cover, or wrap your hair in a soft scarf.

Trim to grow

It sounds backwards, but a small trim (half an inch to an inch) every 8 to 12 weeks removes split ends before they travel up and break off more hair. Long hair that is trimmed regularly usually ends up longer and thicker at the ends than hair that is never cut.

Why oiling helps long hair

Oiling is the heart of desi hair care for good reason. A regular scalp massage keeps the scalp comfortable and nourished, and oil on the lengths makes hair softer and more flexible, so it bends instead of snapping. Oils such as coconut, almond, olive, sesame and castor smooth the outer layer of the hair, add shine and reduce friction when you comb.

A blend tends to work better than a single oil: lighter oils like sesame, almond and jojoba spread easily, while thicker castor oil coats the ends. Traditional herbs like amla, bhringraj, shikakai, mehndi and hibiscus have been part of these blends in our homes for generations.

Desi hair masks for length and softness

Use one of these once a week, on top of your oiling routine. Patch test first and wash well afterwards.

  • Dahi and egg: 3 tablespoons of dahi with 1 egg. Apply to the lengths for 20 to 30 minutes and rinse with cool water (hot water cooks the egg).
  • Aloe vera and oil: 2 tablespoons of fresh aloe gel with 1 tablespoon of your hair oil. Soft, smooth, frizz-free ends.
  • Methi (fenugreek) paste: soak 2 tablespoons of seeds overnight, grind and mix with dahi. Apply for 30 minutes and wash thoroughly.
  • Banana and honey: one ripe banana mashed very smooth with a teaspoon of honey, for very dry, rough ends.
  • Amla and mehndi: a traditional pack that also conditions; keep in mind mehndi stains and adds colour to the hair.

About rice water and onion juice: many people like them, but there is little good evidence that either makes hair grow faster, and onion juice can irritate the scalp. If you try them, patch test, dilute, and rinse well.

Food for long, thick hair

Hair is made of protein (keratin), and your body treats hair as a low priority. If your diet is short of something, hair is one of the first places it shows. A Pakistani kitchen has everything you need:

  • Protein: anday, daal, chanay, dahi, doodh, chicken, fish and paneer. Try to have some protein at every meal.
  • Iron: palak, saag, kaleji, gosht, chanay and gur. Pair with lemon or a fruit for better absorption.
  • Healthy fats and vitamin E: badam, akhrot, alsi (flax seeds), til and olive oil.
  • Zinc: kaddu ke beej, chanay, gosht and dairy.
  • Vitamin C: amrood, kinnow, maltay, lemon and amla.
  • Water: 8 to 10 glasses a day, more in summer.

Crash dieting is one of the most common causes of sudden hair fall, often two to three months after the diet starts. If you are trying to lose weight, do it slowly.

How to make hair look thicker

You cannot change the number of follicles you were born with, but you can make the hair you have look much fuller:

  • Keep the ends healthy. Thin, see-through ends make all hair look thin. Regular trims fix this fastest.
  • Reduce breakage around the hairline with soft hair ties and looser styles, so baby hairs can grow out.
  • Oil the scalp regularly, and use a lightweight blend that does not leave hair flat and greasy for days.
  • Try a layered cut or a change of parting for instant volume.
  • Dry with your head upside down on a cool setting for lift at the roots.
  • Check your health if hair is thinning all over: iron, vitamin D and thyroid are very common causes in Pakistan.

Long hair care by hair type

Straight hair

Straight hair shows oil quickly and can look flat. Focus oil on the scalp and the ends, leave the middle lighter, and wash it out properly. A light blend suits you better than heavy castor oil on its own. Volume comes from healthy, trimmed ends and drying with lift at the roots.

Wavy hair

Wavy hair is often dry in the middle and frizzy on top, especially in humid Karachi or monsoon Lahore. Oil the lengths generously, scrunch a drop of oil into damp waves instead of combing them out dry, and avoid brushing once dry.

Curly hair

Curls are the driest and most fragile hair type, because natural oil from the scalp cannot travel down the spiral. Curly hair loves oiling: a pre-wash oil treatment every time, conditioner every wash, detangling only when wet and full of conditioner, and never brushing dry curls. Curly hair shrinks, so it is often much longer than it looks.

Oily scalp, dry ends

Very common in Pakistan. Oil the scalp only 30 to 60 minutes before washing, but oil the ends more often, even on non-wash days with a few drops. Shampoo the scalp only and condition the ends only.

Shaadi season, heat and chemical treatments

Weddings, mehndi and dholki often mean straightening, curling and hairspray several times in a few weeks. Heat is the fastest way to break long hair. If you must use it:

  • Always use a heat protectant spray and keep tools on the lowest setting that works.
  • Never straighten wet or damp hair.
  • Oil the night before a function, wash in the morning, then style.
  • After rebonding or keratin, oil the lengths regularly and use sulphate-free shampoo.
  • Give your hair heat-free days between functions, with a loose plait and an oil massage.

Long hair for girls and children

Many mothers want long hair for their daughters. Children’s hair is fine and fragile, so be gentle: a little mild oil once or twice a week, a soft comb, loose plaits instead of tight rubber bands for school, and no heat tools. Good food and sleep do more for children’s hair than any product.

What to expect, month by month

TimeWhat you may notice
Weeks 1 to 2Softer, shinier hair after oiling; easier combing.
Weeks 4 to 8Less breakage on the comb and pillow, fewer split ends.
Month 3Around 3 cm of new growth; ends look healthier after a trim.
Month 6Around 6 cm of growth kept, not broken; fuller looking ends.
Month 12Up to 12 to 15 cm of new length, if breakage stays low.

Take a photo of your hair from the back on day one, in the same light and position, and compare every three months. It is far more reliable than the mirror.

When to see a doctor

  • Hair falling in clumps or round bald patches.
  • Thinning all over the scalp for more than three months.
  • Hair fall with tiredness, weight changes, irregular periods or feeling cold all the time.

Our hair fall treatment at home guide explains the common causes in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make my hair grow longer naturally?

You cannot make hair grow much faster than about 1 cm a month, but you can stop losing length to breakage: oil the scalp and ends 2 to 3 times a week, condition, detangle gently, avoid heat and tight styles, trim every 8 to 12 weeks and eat enough protein and iron.

Why is my hair not growing past my shoulders?

It is usually growing but breaking at the ends at the same speed. Old, dry ends snap from rough towels, tight hair ties, heat and hot water. Regular trims, oiling the ends and gentler handling usually help hair get longer.

Does trimming make hair grow faster?

Trimming does not change the speed of growth at the roots, but it removes split ends before they travel up the hair and cause more breakage, so you keep more length overall.

Which oil is best for long hair?

A blend of oils such as sesame, coconut, almond, olive and castor with traditional herbs like amla and bhringraj works well for the scalp and the ends. Zeenat Herbal Hair Oil is a blend of 20+ herbs in 10+ oils made for this kind of routine.

Can rice water or onion juice make hair grow faster?

There is little good evidence that either speeds up growth. Rice water can make hair feel smoother, and onion juice can irritate the scalp. Patch test and rinse well if you try them.

How can I make thin hair look thicker?

Keep the ends healthy with regular trims, reduce breakage around the hairline, oil the scalp, try a layered cut, and check iron, vitamin D and thyroid if hair is thinning all over.
